Job Summary
The Director Human Resources (HR) provides leadership and direction for all HR functions at the Hagerstown Powertrain Production manufacturing site to achieve strategic goals through human capital. This is both a strategic and hands-on role that provides full cycle human resources support to our employees and leaders.
The Director of HR is a member of the Hagerstown operations management team and the Powertrain Production People & Culture management team.
Core Responsibilities
Strategic business partner for plant management team members, offering guidance and leadership in achieving overall business goals.
Identify HR related initiatives which will influence the implementation of business strategy.
Advise, counsel, and coach business leaders on workforce related issues, including: performance management, individual and organizational development, policy and regulatory adherence, labor/employee relations, staffing, compensation and benefit issues
Implement Human Resource programs, processes and policies within the plant, compatible with organizational values, ethics and policies and in line with labor law and agreements
Support plant leadership with leadership sourcing, talent development, succession planning, performance management, competence development and compensation & benefits within applicable organization.
Drive, challenge and support line managers regarding change management, employee engagement, organizational-, culture- and people development to improve business performance by using available programs and tools.
Provide proactive leadership and creative insights to clarify and resolve complex business HR issues including progressive labor relations & contract negotiations.
Work closely with HR Center of Expertise and HR Services as well as relevant HR Business Partner network to ensure effective joint delivery of HR services to the organization.
Proactively addresses and manages factory safety
Stay informed about legislation, arbitration decisions, and collective bargaining contracts to assess industry trends
Essential Educational and/or Training Qualifications and Certificates:
Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration or Related Discipline with relevant knowledge of all Human Resources processes
Additional HR education/training preferred
Required Knowledge and experience:
Previous experience in a unionized manufacturing organization required, including contract negotiations
Strong organizational, interpersonal, and multi-cultural communication skills
Demonstrated expertise in implementing and leading change management
Solid negotiation skills with the ability to represent the company’s interest in a variety of business dealings, negotiate and drive best outcomes for Volvo
Experience in Organization Development and Business Cycle Management (i.e. Workforce Planning/Strategic Planning)
Demonstrated knowledge of US employment law and HR professional practices
Coaching/facilitation/advising skills to help drive transformation and organizational change;
Demonstrated experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with union representatives and to support local labor negotiations. Experience with interpretation of the collective bargaining agreement.

For this position, the annual salary is set at $143,565 - $177,345, and where applicable, bonus eligible. The range for this role, as well as final salary offered, is determined by several factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, work-related knowledge, certifications, education, skills and experience. In addition to these factors, we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as part of any final offer.
